Living in queer-friendly San Francisco in 1999, Sarah Leavitt (Abbi Jacobson) works and (almost!) illustrates for a progressive magazine, and is about to hop on the U-Haul express with her girlfriend, Donimo (Samira Wiley). But when Sarah's mother, Midge (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), starts exhibiting increasingly eccentric behaviour, familial ties pull her back to her conservative hometown in Maine. With emotional and physical distance threatening her relationships and the weight of being the eldest daughter on her shoulders, Sarah discovers that the heartbreaking reality of Alzheimer's disease is a tangled web of memory that persists in the minds of those left behind.
