Patrick and Lisa O’Reilly live with their ten children, five girls and five boys, in a mobile home illegally parked on the side of an isolated country road. Pa’ is the descendant of a proud traditional family of Irish Travelers, nomads trekking through the land, rearing horses and dogs, and living off odd jobs. Lisa embraced the choice of living on the margins of society, holding the family together through hardships. But the pressure to conform to “normal” society and give their children a dignified life keeps mounting.
Alexander Murphy shot his visually gorgeous and tenderly close portrait of the O’Reilly family over the course of five years. Runner up for the Best Documentary Award in Cannes, TIN CASTLE is a sincere and understanding celebration of a disappearing way of living and a heartwarming little masterpiece of documentary filmmaking.
