Annemarie Jacir has built a beautiful career depicting the everyday life and struggles of the Palestinian people in heartfelt works like Wajib (2017). With Palestine 36 she managed to raise resources (from Arab as well as global funds) to produce an ambitious fresco of her people's struggle for independence and self-determination. On the backdrop of the British Mandate of the 1930s, Jacir conjures up a sprawling narrative with characters involved in the crucial historical events that led to the strikes and the revolt against the colonial rule. Capitalising on the uninhibited performances of a cast sporting great Palestinian actors Hiam Abbas and Saleh Bakri and international talents, such as Jeremy Irons, Jacir delivers a classic narrative that morphs into a captivating fresco of a historical struggle encompassing the soul of a people and their attachment to their ancestral land.
