As part of NZIFF’s Journeys strand, join us for a special day celebrating Japanese cinema, culture, and storytelling at Massey University National Academy of Screen Arts Cinema on Sunday 16 August.

Throughout the day, audiences can enjoy a curated selection of Japanese films alongside a range of special events and cultural experiences designed to bring the stories, histories, and traditions explored on screen to life.

We are delighted to welcome Japanese director Yukiko Sode, who will be in attendance for a special Q&A following the 2:15pm screening of All the Lovers in the Night. Audiences will have the opportunity to hear from one of Japan’s most exciting contemporary filmmakers and gain insight into her creative process.

Audiences can also explore an exhibition accompanying Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s The Samurai and the Prisoner, providing rich historical and cultural context to complement the film.

Ahead of the 7:45pm screening of The Samurai and the Prisoner, the Wellington Omote Senke Sado Club will present a traditional Japanese tea ceremony from 6:45pm. Guests are invited to experience this beautiful cultural practice and enjoy tea before the screening.

Japanese food will be available for purchase between sessions throughout the day, creating a welcoming space for audiences to gather, connect, and celebrate Japanese cinema beyond the screen.
