NZIFF Engage: Panel Discussions at NZIFF 2023

NZIFF Engage is a series of panel discussions and events taking place in Auckland and Wellington which delve deeper into the themes of selected films in NZIFF 2023.

Sorcery, Witchcraft and the figure of the Witch – Curator Tour and Discussion
Saturday 29 July 1.00pm | Gus Fisher Gallery
A tour of the exhibition She Could Lie On Her Back and Sink at Gus Fisher Gallery, exploring contemporary artistic responses to witchcraft (1pm), followed by a discussion on sorcery, witchcraft and the figure of the witch in contemporary culture (2pm).

The Female Gaze in Film – a panel discussion
Sunday 30 July 1.00pm | Villa Maria Gallery, ASB Waterfront Theatre
Following the screening of Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power at ASB Waterfront Theatre Nina Menkes’ documentary essay uses footage from hundreds of films to deconstruct and re-examine the male gaze in cinema. Panelists will discuss how cinema has trained us to look at bodies, and where that leaves us as audiences and filmmakers.
