Festival favourites make a strong showing in this year’s Oscar, Bafta nominations

Awards-season is once again upon us, with the Academy Award nominees being revealed this morning, following last week’s Bafta nominee announcement.
NZIFF features make a strong showing at both the Oscars and the Baftas, with several titles from the 2022 festival garnering nominations, including a Best Picture Oscar nod for our closing night film Triangle of Sadness (pictured).
Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner took a total of three Oscar nominations, with a Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Östlund adding to the Best Picture nom. This follows on from three nominations at this year’s Baftas, for Original Screenplay, Best Casting and Best Supporting Actress for Dolly de Leon’s deliciously wicked turn in the third act of the comic class satire.
Elsewhere Paul Mescal picks up a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance as one half of a father-daughter holidaymaking duo in the breezy and bittersweet Aftersun. After topping film-of-the-year lists across the board (see: Sight and Sound, Indiewire, The Guardian) Aftersun picked up four nominations at the Baftas, including another Best Actor nod for Mescal, Best Casting, Outstanding British Film, and Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer for Charlotte Wells (writer/director). Surely a shoo-in gong for the Scottish filmmaker.
Everyone’s favourite stop-motion crustacean Marcel the Shell with Shoes On picked up a Best Animated Feature nomination at both the Oscars and the Baftas, keeping the momentum rolling after being dubbed “movie of the year” by The Spinoff (we’re not suggesting that the latter declaration informed the former… but we’re not not suggesting it either).
Lukas Dhont’s Close picked up an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature, after missing out on a Bafta nod in the equivalent category (Best film not in the English language) to two other NZIFF 2022 features, Corsage and Decision to Leave. The latter also received a Bafta nomination in the Best Director category for Korean auteur Park Chan-wook.
Rounding off the nominations, heavy-hitting doco on the Russian opposition leader, Navalny garnered a Best Documentary nod from both academies, alongside Sara Dosa’s mesmerising Fire of Love, whilst little-seen but much-admired A House Made of Splinters also nabbed an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary category.
The 76th Baftas Awards ceremony will take place from 8am Monday 20 Feb (NZST) and the 95th Academy Awards ceremony will kick off at 1pm Monday 13 March (also NZST). In case you missed them at last year's festival, see below for how you can view all of the above films.
