The following international guests will join us at select screenings during NZIFF 2018 in Auckland and Wellington.
Debra Granik (Winter's Bone) will present her film Leave No Trace in person at its NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. Leave No Trace is Granik’s fourth feature. The film, which premiered at Sundance 2018 and screened as part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, stars Ben Foster and New Zealand actress Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie.
Gabrielle Brady will present her film Island of the Hungry Ghosts in person at select NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. Her short film Island (2017), which focused on Christmas Island’s refugee detention centre and the surrounding eco-system, was commissioned as part of The Guardian documentary series and expanded into her first feature, Island of the Hungry Ghosts.
Sari Braithwaite will present her film [CENSORED] in person at its NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. In creating [CENSORED], Braithwaite spent months surveying the thousands of ‘celluloid scraps’ excised by censors between 1958–1971 and stored in the National Archives of Australia.
Tina Brown will present her film United Skates in person at its NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. Tina Brown is a Vietnamese-Australian filmmaker. Based in New York for more than 20 years, she has worked in media and entertainment through various roles, from film publicist to producer, and now filmmaker. United Skates is her first feature film.
Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani will present their film Let the Corpses Tan in person at its NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani are a married filmmaking couple from Brussels, Belgium. From their early short film collaborations through to their feature debut and beyond, they have co-directed all of their films.
Benjamin Gilmour will present his film Jirga in person at select NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. Benjamin Gilmour is an Australian filmmaker, author and paramedic, based in Northern NSW. Jirga, shot secretly in Afghanistan with hardly any money or resources, reunites Gilmour with the Pashtun people he worked closely with on Son of a Lion.
Soda_Jerk will present their film TERROR NULLIUS in person at its NZIFF screenings in Auckland and Wellington. Working at the intersection of documentary and speculative fiction, Soda_Jerk is fundamentally interested in the politics of images: how they circulate, whom they benefit and how they can be undone. Their sample-based practice takes the form of films
Producer Rita Walsh will present I Used to Be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story in person at select screenings in Auckland and Wellington. I Used to be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story is the result of a five year collaboration between director Jessica Leski and Rita Walsh. Rita’s previous film credits include working as Associate Producer on Kitty Green’s documentary Casting JonBenet.
