How To — Online

Introduction

NZIFF At Home — Online brings the festival experience to the comfort of your living room.

This year we’ve curated a special programme of more than 80 feature length films and short film collections for streaming on your television, computer, handheld device or home cinema setup.

At Home — Online films are available as Online Rentals, viewed within 48 hours of purchase, or Online Premieres, viewed at a set date and time and including special Filmmaker Extras and selected live post-film Q&As.

NOTE: Online Premieres are available to rent from 10 July. Online Rentals are available to rent starting 25 July, with new rentals made available each day of the festival. For now, you may wish to create an account, try our test film trailer and create your Wishlist so you’re ready to go.

athome.nziff.co.nz

athome.nziff.co.nz is our dedicated streaming platform for purchasing and watching films At Home — Online. We recommend bookmarking this website and creating an account in advance.

Download the App

Once youve purchased films on athome.nziff.co.nz, you can also watch them on your handheld device or cast them to your TV via the NZIFF At Home — Online app. (Please read our System Requirements before using the app. A Chromecast or Apple TV device for your TV is required.)

  • Download the app from Google Play – requires Android 6.0 or later.
  • Download the app from the Apple App Store  requires iOS11 or later.

Films can be downloaded securely to your device via the app for viewing offline. Time limits and expiry dates still apply. Note you do not need to download a film to cast it to your TV screen, and for best performance we recommend you stream and cast it via your internet connection instead.

The Basics

There are four things you need to purchase and watch films on our streaming platform athome.nziff.co.nz:

  • An NZIFF At Home — Online account
Create one over at athome.nziff.co.nz (this is different from your account here at nziff.co.nz).
  • A valid credit or debit card
Only New Zealand-registered Visa, Mastercard or Debit cards can be used. Visa-enabled Prezzy cards are also accepted.
  • An internet connection
Broadband and fibre are supported. However, if your connection is poor or inconsistent you may experience problems during streaming. Those on basic ADSL plans should limit the number of devices on their network and consider 720p or Auto resolution to improve performance. (Click the icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the player to select the streaming quality of a film.)
  • A screen to watch on
Stream films directly on your computer or laptop screen; cast from your computer, laptop or handheld device to a TV via Chromecast or Apple TV; or connect from your computer or laptop to a TV via an HDMI cable.

System Requirements

Your home setup must meet our System Requirements:

  • Computer or laptop with a supported browser
Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Opera.
Mac OSX 10.7 or later: Safari
We recommend using the latest version of your browser. Internet Explorer and earlier versions of Safari may require you to install Flash or Widevine plugins.
Note: Firefox is not supported on all operating systems.
    - Note: Google Chrome is not supported for Mac users. Please use your Macs native browser Safari.
  • Handheld device
Download the app from Google Play here – requires Android 6.0 or later.
Download the app from the Apple App Store here – requires iOS11 or later.
    - Note: The app can only be downloaded to a compatible handheld device and cast to a TV via Chromecast or Apple TV device. Other third-party devices are not supported due to copy protection.
    - Note: The app can only be used to watch films. Purchasing must take place on a supported web browser before using the app to watch or cast films. Any films purchased online will be automatically added to the app.
  • Television
For the best viewing, we recommend an HDMI cable from your computer or laptop to your TV. Casting may be available from the app or Google Chrome browser, provided your TV is Chromecast-enabled or you have a Chromecast or Apple TV device. Your TV will need to be connected to the same WiFi network as your laptop, phone or tablet. Please check your TV and device specifications.
    - Note: Screen mirroring and screensharing is not supported.
    - Note: Casting from Google Chrome browser on a Mac to Chromecast is not supported.
    - Note: Loading the athome.nziff.co.nz streaming platform via a Smart TV's in-built web browser is not supported.
    - Note: An adaptor may be required to connect an HDMI cable to your computer or laptop. Please check the specifications of your hardware.

Screen devices and browsers will register automatically as you use them. You may have up to three registered on your account but may only stream from one at a time. Devices can be removed in the My Devices section of your account. We strongly recommend you take time to get set up before you settle in for your first film.

    - Note: At Home — Online screenings are intended for private residences only. See our Terms and Conditions.

NZIFF At Home — Online prices are inclusive of booking and credit card fees. For screenings in cinemas, ticket types and prices, including booking and/or credit card fees are at the discretion of the venues. Please check the In Cinema page for information and updates.

FAQs

Find answers to frequently asked ticketing and streaming questions here. General Festival FAQs are found at Festival 2020 FAQ

When can I buy and watch films?
Online Premieres are available to purchase from 10 July, with films streamed at the advertised time and date. Online Rentals are available to purchase starting 25 July. New Online Rentals are released each day at 10.00 am and will be available to purchase for up to one week. Once purchased, you have 48 hours to watch the film, but please check details on the film’s purchase page for some exceptions.

Note: Online Rentals can be purchased right up until the end of their availability period. Your 48 hours to watch the film will begin from the time of purchase and beyond the availability period, if needed.

Do I need two accounts?
One account is optional and the other is required.

  • A My Festival account (on nziff.co.nz) is optional, but recommended. It's used to save your Wishlist, mark films as purchased, subscribe to email updates and more. You can create a Wishlist without a My Festival account, but your list will only be saved on your current browser/device. If you have bought tickets in previous years, you likely already have a My Fesival account.
  • An At Home — Online account (on our streaming platform athome.nziff.co.nz) is required to purchase and watch films. The Watch Online button beside each film in your Wishlist will bring you to athome.nziff.co.nz. To get back to your Wishlist, click My Wishlist in the top At Home — Online menu.

You can register or sign in to either account by clicking Sign In in the top right menu on the Festival home page.

How do I watch my films?
See System Requirements for full specifications.

  • On a laptop or computer with Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 — Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Safari or Opera.
or Mac OSX 10.7 or later — Safari. Please note Firefox is not supported and Google Chrome is not supported for Mac users.
  • On a phone or tablet with the app. Download the Android app here. Download the Apple app here.
  • On a TV, via an HDMI cable (recommended) or cast from the app or Google Chrome browser (PC only), provided your TV is Chromecast-enabled or you have a Chromecast or Apple TV device. Your TV will need to be connected to the same WiFi network as your laptop, phone, or tablet.

We highly recommend testing your home cinema set up before purchasing or watching any films. The 2020 Festival Trailer is already in the My Library section of your At Home — Online account for you to test your device/s.

Can I watch films on my TV by screen mirroring, screensharing or direct streaming via a Smart TVs in-built web browser?

These methods are not supported due to copy protection. Our streaming platform has only been authorised to cast via Chromecast and Apple TV devices to a TV, and to an HDMI-connected monitor or TV, for the benefit of our filmmakers and rights holders. Casting via Chromecast for Mac laptop/iMac users is not supported.

How do I get the best video and sound quality?

  • Video  All of our films, unless otherwise indicated, are available in HD. Depending on your internet connection, the player will choose a lower resolution when left on the default ‘Auto’ setting. You can select from the available resolutions by clicking the ‘Auto’ button in the player menu once you’ve started the film.
  • Sound — Our films stream in either Stereo or 5.1 Surround Sound.  Where 5.1 is available and the audio device you’re using supports it, then 5.1 will play automatically. Otherwise, the film will play in Stereo.
  • Streaming  Full System Requirements are needed to stream films. Note that At Home  Online is only available to New Zealand audiences. A stable broadband connection, a supported browser, and an HDMI cable – if connecting to a TV – are recommended for the best streaming quality.

Can I screen films in my café/bar/community hall?
No. At Home — Online is intended for private residences only. You may not advertise a public or community screening or charge admission. Please see our Terms and Conditions. We recommend using our Group price option and inviting your favourite co-workers or social club mates around to your place.

Why aren’t all films available for the length of the festival?
NZIFF At Home — Online brings a unique mix of living room comfort and exciting film events, and we aim to give you the best of both worlds. In working with filmmakers, distributors and rights holders, it was agreed that an Online Premiere event, followed by a period of rental was the best way to combine that festival feel we love and miss with the at-home experience.

Will this be available outside New Zealand?
No. NZIFF At Home — Online is only available to New Zealand audiences. Sorry, Australia!
