Ivan SenIvan Sen is a Gamilaroi person who grew up in Tamworth and Inverell in the New England region of northern New South Wales.
Filmmaking was the last thing on his mind whilst growing up in a small country town. It wasn't until the end of high school that his filmmaking journey began. His mother married the local newspaper editor who introduced Sen to photography. This became an instant passion and Sen in enrolled in a photographic degree at Griffith University in Brisbane. Photography became an outlet for Sen to explore his own indigenous family as well as develop his interest in identity and landscape. Toward the end of the course, Sen was introduced to a new elective. The subject involved producing a photographic slide presentation that was cued to a music track.
After graduating from Griffith University, he worked in a Brisbane production house where he sound recorded and camera operated on corporate videos and commercials. During this time, he studied several short courses, from acting to creative writing to directing. He returned to study Film and Television at Griffith University in 1994, he then attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 1995.
Since graduating, and winning the Southern Star Award for the best body of work by a graduating student, Sen has written and directed several documentaries and short films. Beneath Clouds is his first feature drama. It debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in February and has provoked much discussion on release in Australia since late May.
