Censoring the Festival

Festivals in the UK, Canada and Australia can screen unclassfied films to adult audiences. Why can't we?

When you take into account the many NZIFF office hours devoted to administering our censorship requirements, along with the submission fees and our obligation to pay for the actual censorship screenings, we estimate that it cost us $30,000 to have this year’s programme classified.  We are grateful to the officers involved for their extraordinary cooperation in dealing with the associated workload, but we remain unconvinced that every film we show should be subject to this cumbersome and expensive regime.
